Essential business and essential workers

3/27/2020

Sapona Plastics is classified as an essential business and our workers are essential workers not subject to federal, state or local quarantine, stay at home or isolation orders.  This is supported by the Presidential Policy Directive (PPD-21) regarding Critical Infrastructure and Resilience, and letters from our customers.  More than 50% of our business is in these critical infrastructure fields such as telecommunications, energy, transportation and medical/pharmaceutical. We have also notified the NCEM Business Emergency Operations Center (BEOC) as required.

covid-19 pandemic update

3/23/2020

The governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency and the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a Pandemic.

We would like to thank our workers and suppliers who have maintained operations at full capacity, while at the same time striving to keep social distance, staying home when not at work, and staying home if sick.  To date we have not had any cases of COVID-19.  We believe there has been one case in Randolph County.  Schools are closed and this puts additional hardship on workers with children.  We have implemented our pandemic policy per guidance from the CDC and others and are keeping in close contact with our industry and government officials.

We believe that we are an essential business for more than half of the products we produce including telecommunications, energy, air filtration, pharmacy and household cleaning supplies.  Therefore, we expect to stay open unless we experience a confirmed case of COVID-19, whereupon we would shut down for 3 days to sanitize and clean, returning to operation with non-symptomatic workers as quickly as possible.

Our objectives are to reduce transmission among workers, to protect workers who are at a higher risk due to age, or chronic illness, maintain business operations, provide safe jobs for workers and minimize impact on customers.  Everyone’s cooperation is necessary for the measures to be effective that are being taken nationally and within our business locally.  Communication is important so let us know if you have concerns.

Public sentiment against plastics

3/3/2020

There is no doubt that the oceans have been polluted with plastic waste, some of which may have originated with each of us, but the problem is with waste disposal and not the use of plastics in general.  In addition, the use of plastics is a positive when considering total environmental impact. Sapona Plastics has assembled several links to websites that are addressing the problem and dispelling some of the myths.
